Effective August 29, 2025, the United States suspended its duty-free “de minimis” threshold of US$800 for all countries, including Canada. All postal shipments to the US, regardless of their value, will require duties before the package is delivered. While books are classed as HS4901 and theoretically duty-free, they are in fact charged brokerage/handling or other fees. Canadian delivery services have no way to know how much the US will assess until our package arrives at the US border. In the fall of 2025, I paid Cdn$30 to ship paperbacks worth Cdn$30, and the US assessed a duty and tax amount of US$38.69 (or Cdn$54). American policy limits Americans to buying from American services, such as Amazon.
